Virtual reality treatment of flying phobia.

2002

Flying phobia (FP) might become a very incapacitating and disturbing problem in a person's social, working, and private areas. Psychological interventions based on exposure therapy have proved to be effective, but given the particular nature of this disorder they bear important limitations. Exposure therapy for FP might be excessively costly in terms of time, money, and efforts. Virtual reality (VR) overcomes these difficulties as different significant environments might be created, where the patient can interact with what he or she fears while in a totally safe and protected environment, the therapist's consulting room. This paper intends, on one hand, to show the different scenarios desig…

Treating Cockroach Phobia With Augmented Reality

2009

In vivo exposure is the recommended treatment of choice for specific phobias; however, it demonstrates a high attrition rate and is not effective in all instances. The use of virtual reality (VR) has improved the acceptance of exposure treatments to some individuals. Augmented reality (AR) is a variation of VR wherein the user sees the real world augmented by virtual elements. The present study tests an AR system in the short (posttreatment) and long term (3, 6, and 12 months) for the treatment of cockroach phobia using a multiple baseline design across individuals (with 6 participants). The AR exposure therapy was applied using the "one-session treatment" guidelines developed by Öst, Salko…

Shock control bump design optimization on natural laminar aerofoil

2011

The chapter investigates Shock Control Bumps (SCB) on a Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) aerofoil; RAE 5243 for Active Flow Control (AFC). A SCB approach is used to decelerate supersonic flow on the suction/pressure sides of transonic aerofoil that leads delaying shock occurrence or weakening of shock strength. Such an AFC technique reduces significantly the total drag at transonic speeds. This chapter considers the SCB shape design optimisation at two boundary layer transition positions (0 and 45%) using an Euler software coupled with viscous boundary layer effects and robust Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs). The optimisation method is based on a canonical Evolution Strategy (ES) algorithm and inco…

Virtual reality in the treatment of claustrophobic fear: A controlled, multiple-baseline design

2000

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) exposure in the treatment of claustrophobic fear. We evaluated the intervention following a controlled, multiple-baseline design across 4 participants with claustrophobic fear who sought psychological help in our anxiety disorders clinic. The treatment consisted of 8 individual VR graded exposure sessions. Data were obtained at pretreatment, posttreatment, and 3-month follow-up on several clinical measures: Behavioral Avoidance Test, Self-Efficacy Toward Closed Spaces, Problem-Related Impairment Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, 1978), and Anxiety Sensitivity Index (Peterson & Reiss, 1992). Cognitive-Behavioural Treatment Package for Teaching Grooming Skills to a Man with an Intellectual Disability

2000

A combination of health education, use of picture cues based on task analyses, a system of least prompts and social reinforcement was applied to teach various grooming skills to a man with a moderate intellectual disability. A multiple baseline design across behaviours was employed to show the effects. The results indicated rapid learning of lacking skills such as tooth brushing, shaving, showering and washing of arms and face.
